Speech in context: Address was given by Abraham Lincoln at what was then the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, upon accepting the Illinois Republican Party’s nomination as that state’s United States senator. Lincoln was unsuccessful in his campaign for the Senate seat held by Stephen Douglas.

Speech in context: Presented at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg Pennsylvania, four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg.
